Biography
Rafael Alexandre da Conceição Leão was born on June 10, 1999, in Almada, Portugal. He plays as a left winger and forward for AC Milan in Serie A and for the Portugal national team, known for his fast pace and skillful dribbling on the left side. From a young age, Leão showed the technical skills and athletic abilities that caught the attention of top European clubs.
Leão came up through the youth system at Sporting CP, one of Portugal's well-known clubs, and made his first-team debut in 2018. That year, he was part of the team that won the 2017–18 Taça da Liga. His time at Sporting CP ended suddenly and under tough circumstances when a group of extreme supporters attacked the club's training facilities and physically harmed players. Leão and several teammates ended their contracts in response to the incident. This led to a long legal battle over compensation, although Leão argued the violence justified his leaving.
After leaving Sporting CP, Leão moved to French Ligue 1 team Lille on a free transfer. His performance in France gained a lot of interest from clubs across Europe, and in the summer of 2019, AC Milan signed him for about €35 million. At Milan, Leão became one of the most threatening wide forwards in Serie A. He had his breakthrough during the 2021–22 season, playing a major role in Milan's first Serie A title in eleven years. His efforts that season earned him the Serie A Most Valuable Player award, marking him as the top player in Italian football that year.
Internationally, Leão played for Portugal at various youth levels before making his senior debut in 2021. He was part of the under-17 team that won the 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, showing early promise. He later played in Portugal's squads at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany. In 2025, he added a senior international trophy to his achievements when Portugal won the UEFA Nations League.
Leão’s playing style is centered on his ability to quickly get past defenders, move the ball fast over long distances, and contribute goals and assists from the left side of the attack. Now in his mid-twenties, he is widely seen as one of the best wingers in European football and remains a key player for both AC Milan and the Portuguese national team.

Leão's early years lined up with a time of growing optimism in Portuguese football, boosted by the national team's UEFA Euro 2016 win.
