He became one of the top Slovenian footballers of his time, with a career that took him across Europe and to Australia. Known for his skills, leadership, and hard work in central midfield, Koren became well-known both at clubs and internationally over more than 20 years.
He started his professional career in Slovenia before moving to Norway, where he proved to be a strong midfielder in Scandinavian football. His performance in Norway caught the eye of English clubs, leading to his move to West Bromwich Albion in the Championship. At The Hawthorns, Koren became an important player in the team, eventually becoming club captain and leading them into the Premier League. Being captain in the top tier of English football was a big accomplishment for someone from a small footballing country.
Internationally, Koren earned 61 caps for Slovenia from 2003 to 2011 and scored five goals. He was the national team captain and led Slovenia through their World Cup qualification in 2010 in South Africa. It was only Slovenia’s second World Cup appearance, and Koren’s leadership during that campaign made him a national sports icon. Slovenia made it to the group stage, playing against England, the United States, and Algeria.
After his stint in England, Koren played in Australia, extending his career and gaining experience in different football settings. He played for Australian club teams and maintained solid performance levels as his career progressed. His decision to explore opportunities in Norway was a key step, as the Norwegian Tippeligaen offered a competitive platform to showcase his skills and gain broader attention.
