Biography
Robert Lewandowski was born on August 21, 1988, in Warsaw, Poland. He is a professional footballer who plays as a striker for FC Barcelona in La Liga and is the captain of the Polish national team. Known as one of the greatest strikers ever, he's one of five players to score 100 goals with three different clubs. He ranks third in all-time UEFA Champions League scoring with 109 goals and has over 700 senior career goals for club and country. He is married to Anna Lewandowska, a martial arts athlete and entrepreneur, and they have two daughters.
Lewandowski started his professional career in the lower levels of Polish football, playing for Znicz Pruszków before moving to top-tier Lech Poznań. At Poznań, he was crucial in winning the 2009-10 Ekstraklasa title, which caught the attention of clubs across Europe. In 2010, he signed with Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga, where he became one of the most feared strikers in Europe. During his time at Dortmund, he won two Bundesliga titles and reached the 2013 UEFA Champions League final, finishing as the league's top scorer and becoming a world-class talent.
In 2014, Lewandowski joined Bayern Munich on a free transfer, starting the most successful part of his club career. Over eight seasons with Bayern, he won the Bundesliga title every year and was a key player in Bayern's treble-winning 2019-20 season, which included the UEFA Champions League. That year, he won The Best FIFA Men's Player award, the UEFA Men's Player of the Year award, and the German Footballer of the Year award. He was expected to win the Ballon d'Or, but it wasn't awarded because of COVID-19 disruptions. In 2021, he won the European Golden Shoe by finishing as the top scorer in Europe's top leagues.
In 2022, Lewandowski moved to FC Barcelona, starting a new chapter in his career at 33. He adapted quickly in Spain, winning the Pichichi Trophy as La Liga's top scorer and helping Barcelona win three La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey. His Pichichi Trophy made him the joint-record holder for the most top scorer awards in Europe's top five leagues, with eight total. For Poland, he has 165 international caps since his debut in 2008, has been captain since 2014, and has played in four UEFA European Championships and two FIFA World Cups. He briefly retired from international football in 2025 before returning and being reinstated as captain.
Before Fame
Robert Lewandowski grew up in Warsaw and got into football at a young age, thanks in part to his father Krzysztof, who was a professional footballer and judo champion. His mother, Iwona, was also an accomplished volleyball player, so athletics were a big part of his upbringing. Even so, his journey to becoming a professional footballer wasn't easy. He spent his early years playing in the lower divisions of Polish football instead of coming up through a major club's academy.
He started his senior career with Znicz Pruszków in Poland's third and then second tier, where his talent for scoring goals caught the eye of bigger clubs. Moving to Lech Poznań in the Ekstraklasa was a crucial step that put him on the international stage. Winning the league title in 2009-10 and performing well at a high level in Polish football provided him the opportunity to transfer to Borussia Dortmund, which was the real start of his rise to global fame.
