Biography
Samuel Yves Umtiti is a former French footballer who played as a center-back and gained international fame as part of France's 2018 World Cup-winning team. Born on November 14, 1993, in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Umtiti moved to France as a child and rose through the French football system to become one of the top defenders of his generation. His career lasted over a decade in top European football, with stints at some of the continent's top clubs.
Umtiti started his professional career with Olympique Lyonnais in 2012, quickly proving himself as a reliable defender. In his first season, he helped Lyon win the Coupe de France and Trophée des Champions, showing early promise at the senior level. Over four seasons with Lyon, he played 170 matches and scored three goals, honing the defensive skills and tactical smarts that would later be useful at Barcelona. His strong performances in Ligue 1 caught the eye of big European clubs, and he transferred to FC Barcelona in 2016 for €25 million.
At Barcelona, Umtiti became a key player, contributing to the team winning five major trophies, including three Copa del Rey titles and two La Liga championships. His time at the Camp Nou matched some of the team's most successful years, playing with top talent and taking part in the UEFA Champions League. However, injuries affected his later years at Barcelona, leading to less playing time and eventually a loan to Italian club Lecce.
Umtiti's international career with France started early, as he earned 47 caps and scored three goals at youth levels, including being part of France's 2013 U-20 World Cup win. He made his senior debut for France at UEFA Euro 2016, where they reached the final but lost to Portugal. His standout international moment came during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he scored the key goal in the semi-final against Belgium, helping France win their second World Cup. Following the World Cup win, Umtiti was awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2018 for his contribution to French football. After a loan in Italy, he returned to France in 2023 to join Lille and retired from professional football in 2025.
