Biography

Sara Alpysqyzy Nazarbayeva, born Sara Konakayeva on February 12, 1941, in Qyzylzhar, Kazakhstan, is a notable Kazakhstani public figure, mainly known for being the First Lady of Kazakhstan from 1991 to 2019. She married Nursultan Nazarbayev in 1962 after graduating, marking the beginning of a long partnership during times of significant political and social change in Central Asia. They have three daughters—Dariga, Dinara, and Aliya—eleven grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. Throughout her husband's presidency, Nazarbayeva focused on humanitarian, cultural, and children's welfare causes.

In 1992, after Kazakhstan gained independence, Nazarbayeva started the Böbek International Children's Foundation, using her platform to support children's well-being and development. The foundation became one of Kazakhstan's leading charitable organizations, backing educational programs, child health initiatives, and cultural development for youth. Her commitment to children's issues earned her international recognition, including the Ihsan Dogramaci Family Health Foundation Prize from the World Health Organization in 1997 and the International Unity Prize.

Throughout her public life, Nazarbayeva received many awards from Kazakhstan and abroad. These include the Dostyk Order of Grade I, the Order of Glory and Honor, the Order of the Leopard, the Golden Heart International Award in 2006, and the Order of the Holy Princess Olga. These honors show international and national appreciation for her contributions to social and humanitarian causes.

In addition to her charitable efforts, Nazarbayeva has been a strong supporter of Kazakh cultural identity and national heritage. She used her role as First Lady to highlight traditional arts, language, and customs as Kazakhstan built its national identity after the Soviet era. Her public activities often connected with family welfare, public health, and cultural preservation, giving her a distinct and recognizable public presence separate from her husband's political career.

Before Fame

Sara Konakayeva was born on February 12, 1941, in Qyzylzhar, in what was then the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. Her early years were shaped by the challenges of the Soviet wartime period and the tough postwar years, during which the Kazakh steppe area underwent major industrialization and collectivization under central Soviet planning. Although educational opportunities for women in Soviet Kazakhstan were limited by broader structural inequalities, they were encouraged by state policy. Nazarbayeva continued her studies until graduation.

After completing her education, she met and married Nursultan Nazarbayev in 1962. At the time, her future husband was starting his career as a worker in the metallurgical industry, long before he reached the heights of political power. Nazarbayeva's shift from private life to a public role happened gradually, picking up speed when Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991 and her husband became the president of the new sovereign state. From then on, she became active in public life, focusing on charitable and cultural work.
