Biography

Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot, born on 11 September 1983 in Keiyo District, Kenya, is one of the most successful long-distance runners in Kenya's athletics history. Her career has lasted over two decades at the top level of the sport. Nicknamed 'pocket rocket,' Cheruiyot is known for her consistent performances and ability to compete under pressure in both the Olympic Games and World Championships.

Cheruiyot first competed in the Olympics as a teenager in the 2000 Sydney Games, showing promise on the international stage. She returned for the 2008 Beijing Games and then won her first Olympic medals at the 2012 London Olympics, earning silver in the 5,000 meters and bronze in the 10,000 meters. Her performances at the World Championships were even more impressive during this time. After taking silver in the 5,000 m at the 2007 World Championships, she became world champion in the event at the 2009 Berlin edition and defended her title in 2011 in Daegu, where she also won gold in the 10,000 meters. She added another World Championship gold in the 10,000 m at the 2015 Beijing edition.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Cheruiyot achieved one of the highlights of her career by winning gold in the 5,000 meters and setting a new Olympic record. She also secured a silver medal in the 10,000 meters, confirming her status as one of the top distance runners of her time. Her ability to excel in both the 5,000 m and 10,000 m events over such a long period is a key feature of her athletic success.

In addition to her achievements in the Olympics and World Championships, Cheruiyot also found success in other international competitions. In 2010, she became the Commonwealth Games champion, African champion, and Continental Cup champion in the 5,000 m, and also won the Diamond League title. She continued to win the Diamond League title in 2011 and 2012, becoming a three-time Diamond League champion. She holds the Kenyan national records in the 2,000 meters and 10,000 meters.

In 2012, Cheruiyot received the Laureus World Sports Award for Sportswoman of the Year, one of the top individual honors in international sports. She was also listed among OkayAfrica's 100 Women in 2017. Her career spans four Olympic cycles and multiple generations of competitors, ranking her among Kenya's most accomplished distance runners.

Before Fame

Vivian Cheruiyot grew up in Keiyo District, a part of the Rift Valley in Kenya known for producing many top long-distance runners. The area's high altitude, tough terrain, and strong running culture naturally helped athletic talent develop early. Cheruiyot showed great potential as a young athlete and was chosen to represent Kenya at the 2000 Sydney Olympics while still in her teens, proving she was already at an elite competitive level.

Her rise coincided with a time when Kenyan women's distance running was gaining more global recognition. Alongside peers like Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia, Cheruiyot trained in a challenging environment that focused on running long distances at high altitudes. The period from her debut in 2000 to her first major championship medals helped her hone her racing skills and build the endurance that later supported her successes at the World Championships and Olympics.
