Biography
Antolín Alcaraz Viveros was born on 30 July 1982 in San Roque González de Santa Cruz, Paraguay. He became a center-back and started his professional career in South America. He later moved to Europe, where he spent most of his playing career. Early on, he changed clubs frequently and struggled to settle, but joining Portuguese side Beira-Mar in 2003 was a key turning point. He stayed with Beira-Mar for five seasons, which helped him improve his defensive skills and gain enough attention to attract clubs from bigger European leagues.
After Portugal, Alcaraz moved to Belgian club Club Brugge, continuing to expand his experience in European football. He then moved to England, spending five years in the Premier League with Wigan Athletic and Everton. His time at Wigan was particularly significant, as the club regularly played in the top tier during an era when they were seen as one of the notable smaller teams in English football. His physical presence and game sense made him a reliable defender, earning him respect from coaches and fans in England.
Alcaraz later went to Spain, spending a year with Las Palmas before eventually returning to Paraguay to continue his career. Overall, he played in multiple countries and leagues, showcasing a versatility that was rare among South American defenders of his time. He also had connections with Valencia and Real Betis during his European stint.
Internationally, Alcaraz was important for the Paraguayan national team. He played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where Paraguay had one of their best performances, reaching the quarter-finals before losing to Spain, the future champions. He also participated in the 2006 and 2014 World Cups, making three consecutive World Cup appearances. His international career included the 2011 Copa América, where Paraguay reached the final, marking a historic moment for the country.
Before Fame
Antolín Alcaraz grew up in San Roque González de Santa Cruz, a city in Paraguay named after a Jesuit missionary saint. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Paraguay's football scene offered few opportunities to reach top-level professional football. Ambitious young players usually had to go abroad to play at higher levels. Alcaraz followed this route, starting his career in South America before moving to Europe in the early 2000s.
His early professional years were unsettled, as was often the case for South American defenders trying to break into established European clubs. The move to Beira-Mar in Portugal in 2003 gave him the foundation he needed, offering consistent first-team play at a stable club. This helped him develop into a Premier League player and a World Cup competitor.
