Aurélien Bayard Chedjou Fongang was born on 20 June 1985 in Douala, Cameroon. A composed and physically imposing centre back, he developed his footballing abilities in Cameroon before making the move to European football, where he would spend the majority of his professional career. His combination of aerial ability, reading of the game, and experience at the highest levels of club and international football made him one of the more reliable defenders produced by Cameroon in his generation.
