Biography
Bajram Begaj was born on March 20, 1967, in Rrogozhinë, a town in central Albania. He attended the University of Medicine in Tirana, where he earned a medical degree before moving into military service. His background in medicine later influenced how he led and managed in his military career with the Albanian Armed Forces.
Begaj's military career lasted several decades, and he climbed the ranks to become one of Albania's top military officials. He served during Albania's transition after communism and its push to modernize and align with Western military groups, especially NATO. Throughout his time in the military, he gained a lot of experience in defense planning, military operations, and working internationally, making him a key player in Albania's defense sector.
In July 2020, Begaj became the 26th Chief of General Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces, reaching the peak of his military career. In this role, he directed Albania's military strategy and was heavily involved in defense policies and international military partnerships. His leadership focused on increasing military professionalism and strengthening Albania's role in NATO.
Begaj moved from military service to politics in 2022 when the ruling Socialist Party chose him as their candidate for president. On June 3, 2022, he was officially nominated for the fourth round of the presidential election and won. His election was a notable event in Albanian politics, as he became only the second president in post-communist Albania with a largely military background. He is married to Armanda Begaj and took office as president in July 2022, bringing his military experience and leadership to the presidency.
Before Fame
Growing up in Rrogozhinë in the final years of Enver Hoxha's communist rule, Begaj firsthand experienced the isolation and economic struggles typical of Albania at that time. Choosing to study medicine at the University of Medicine in Tirana showed both his personal ambitions and the limited career choices for young Albanians then.
The fall of communism in Albania in 1991 brought new opportunities for Begaj's generation. As Albania began its tough transition to democracy and a market economy, the military needed major reform and modernization. This was the setting for Begaj's entry into military service, where he spent most of his career helping change Albania's armed forces from a Soviet-style military to one that was modern and compatible with NATO.
