Biography
David Ospina Ramírez, born on August 31, 1988, in Medellín, is a Colombian professional footballer known as the country's most capped international player, with 129 appearances since his senior debut in 2007. He started in youth football, playing in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship and helping Colombia win gold at the 2005 Bolivarian Games and 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games. His senior debut against Uruguay made him the youngest goalkeeper to play for Colombia at that level.
Ospina's club career kicked off at Atlético Nacional, where he debuted in 2005 at age 17 and won two domestic titles. In 2008, he moved to French Ligue 1 team Nice, and his performances there led to a 2014 signing with Arsenal. With Arsenal, Ospina won the FA Cup in 2015 and 2017, and the 2017 FA Community Shield.
In 2018, Ospina was loaned to Italian Serie A club Napoli, a move that became permanent the next year. He played a key role in Napoli's 2020 Coppa Italia win. When contract talks with Napoli didn't succeed, Ospina joined Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr in 2022, taking his career to the Middle East.
In 2024, Ospina returned to Atlético Nacional as captain and helped the team win the Copa Colombia, adding that trophy to his accomplishments. Throughout his career, Ospina has played in four Copa América tournaments and two FIFA World Cups, establishing himself as a reliable player for Colombia through many years on the national team.
Before Fame
Growing up in Medellín during the 1990s and early 2000s, Ospina honed his football skills in a city crazy about the sport. Atlético Nacional's youth academy was where he began developing as a goalkeeper, with the club spotting his talent early on.
Ospina came into the spotlight when Colombian football was on the rise, with the national team starting to make its mark in South American and global football. His early growth happened alongside more investment in youth programs and a stronger focus on technical skills in Colombian football, leading to the golden generation of players that took the stage in the 2010s.
