Biography
David Villa Sánchez was born on December 3, 1981, in Tuilla, Asturias, Spain. He was nicknamed El Guaje, an Asturian term meaning 'The Kid,' because he often played football with much older children. Despite a serious injury in his childhood, he went on to start a professional career with Sporting de Gijón in 2001, quickly becoming known as a skilled and prolific striker who could score with both feet and his head.
After two seasons with Sporting de Gijón, Villa moved to Real Zaragoza, where he debuted in La Liga and helped the team win the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de España. His performances got him noticed, and in 2005 he joined Valencia for €12 million. Over five seasons at Valencia, Villa won another Copa del Rey and established himself as one of the top strikers in European football, often ranking among the top scorers in La Liga.
In 2010, Barcelona signed Villa for €40 million. In his first season with them, he won the La Liga title and scored in the UEFA Champions League final, aiding Barcelona in winning the European title. After three seasons at Barcelona, he transferred to Atlético Madrid in 2013, where he won another La Liga title and reached the 2014 UEFA Champions League final. Villa then moved to the U.S. to join New York City FC, a new MLS team, where he became the all-time leading scorer and had the most appearances. He won the MLS Most Valuable Player Award in 2016, becoming the first player from New York City FC to do so. In 2018, he moved to Vissel Kobe in Japan before retiring in 2020.
Villa made his international debut for Spain in 2005, earning 98 caps and scoring 59 goals, becoming Spain's all-time top scorer. He played in four major international tournaments, playing a key role in Spain's successful period. He scored three goals at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, was the top scorer at UEFA Euro 2008, and won the Silver Boot at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where Spain won their first World Cup. His contributions were honored with the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit. After retiring, Villa became vice-president of CF Benidorm and joined the Board of Directors of Atlético Madrid.
Before Fame
David Villa grew up in the mining region of Asturias in northern Spain, a place with a strong love for football, although far away from the spotlight of the country's big clubs. As a child, he was passionate about the game and often played against older kids, which helped him develop toughness and technical skills that would define his professional style. A serious injury nearly ended his football dreams early on, but he recovered and continued to climb the ranks through local football systems.
He started his professional career with Sporting de Gijón, the well-known Asturian club, turning pro in 2001. In the lower divisions of Spanish football, Villa showcased the clinical finishing and smart movement that would later make him one of Europe's most feared strikers. His rise from a small mining town to the top levels of La Liga shows both his personal drive and the strong grassroots football culture in Asturias.
