Biography

Édgar Osvaldo Barreto Cáceres, born on July 15, 1984, in Asunción, Paraguay, was a central midfielder known for his discipline, technical skill, and defensive instincts. His career spanned nearly two decades, taking him from South America to the Netherlands and finally to Italy, where he was a dependable player in Serie A.

Barreto began his professional journey at Cerro Porteño, one of Paraguay's top clubs, before moving to Europe to join NEC in the Dutch Eredivisie. His performances there caught the eye of Italian clubs, leading to his move to Serie A with Reggina. This transfer was the start of a long and successful period in Italian football. He later played for Atalanta, Palermo, and Sampdoria, making over 260 appearances in Serie A. His game-reading skills and midfield stability made him a reliable player for each team he joined.

Internationally, Barreto was a key player for the Paraguay national team for nearly a decade. He earned 60 caps from 2004 to 2011 and played at the youth level before joining the senior team. He was part of the Paraguay squad that won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics, losing to Argentina in the final. He also took part in three Copa América tournaments and two FIFA World Cups, including the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where Paraguay reached the quarterfinals before losing to Spain, the eventual winners. In 2011, he was on the Paraguay team that finished as runner-up in the Copa América in Argentina.

After his time in Italy, Barreto returned to the Netherlands for two final seasons with NEC, the club where his European career started. He retired from professional football in 2022, ending a career marked by longevity, consistency, and international success. His ability to perform at a high level in Serie A for so many years made him one of the notable Paraguayan footballers of his generation.

Before Fame

Édgar Barreto grew up in Asunción, Paraguay, where football is a big part of life, thanks to clubs like Olimpia and Cerro Porteño. He came up through the youth system at Cerro Porteño, one of Paraguay's top clubs, and played on Paraguay's U17, U20, and U23 national teams. This solid start in organized youth football at both the club and international levels readied him for the challenges of professional football in Europe.

By the early 2000s, South American players were more frequently finding chances in European leagues, and Paraguay was known for producing skilled and strong midfielders. Barreto’s move to NEC in the Eredivisie was his first experience in European football, a step many South American players used to reach larger leagues. His calmness and effort in the Netherlands made him appealing to Italian clubs and laid the groundwork for his long career in Serie A.
