Biography

Elnur Mammadli was born on 29 June 1988 in Baku, Azerbaijan, and grew up to become one of the most celebrated judokas in his country's sporting history. Competing primarily in the under-73 kilogram weight category, he rose through the ranks of international judo during a period when Azerbaijan was establishing itself as a competitive force in combat sports on the world stage.

Mammadli achieved his greatest athletic triumph at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he claimed the gold medal in the 73 kg division. His victory in the final came against Wang Ki-chun of South Korea, who had been considered the heavy favorite heading into the bout. The win was a significant moment for Azerbaijani sport, as it represented one of the country's most prominent Olympic gold medal performances and brought Mammadli international recognition.

Four years later, at the 2012 London Olympics, Mammadli again reached the medal podium, this time earning a bronze medal in the same weight category. His ability to compete at the highest level across two successive Olympic cycles demonstrated his consistency and longevity as an elite athlete. The bronze in London added to his reputation as one of Azerbaijan's most dependable competitors in individual Olympic events.

Beyond his Olympic accomplishments, Mammadli competed extensively on the International Judo Federation circuit, accumulating experience and results at major tournaments throughout his career. His technical skill and competitive record positioned him as a leading figure in Azerbaijani judo during the late 2000s and 2010s.

Following the conclusion of his active competitive career, Mammadli transitioned into public and administrative life. On 14 September 2024, he was elected chairman of the Public Council under the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan, a role that placed him in a position to influence sports policy and youth development in his home country.

Before Fame

Mammadli was born and raised in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, a city that serves as the hub of the country's sporting infrastructure. He came of age during the post-Soviet period in Azerbaijan, when the newly independent nation was building its own national sports federations and developing pathways for athletes to compete internationally under the Azerbaijani flag.

He trained in judo from a young age, developing his skills within a national system that was increasingly investing in combat sports such as judo, wrestling, and boxing. By the time he reached his late teens, Mammadli had progressed to competing at the international junior level, laying the groundwork for his breakthrough onto the senior world circuit in the years leading up to the 2008 Beijing Games.
