Biography
Giorgi Kvirikashvili is a Georgian politician, economist, and physician who was Prime Minister of Georgia from December 30, 2015, to June 13, 2018. He was born on July 20, 1967, in Tbilisi and pursued a broad educational path that later shaped his career in public service. He studied medicine, economics, and international development, earning degrees from Tbilisi State Medical University, Tbilisi State University, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Kvirikashvili's political journey picked up speed after Georgia's 2012 parliamentary elections when he became Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development on October 25, 2012. He focused on economic reforms and initiatives to modernize Georgia's economy and boost its global competitiveness. His role grew when he was made Deputy Prime Minister on July 26, 2013, continuing to lead economic policies.
In September 2015, Kvirikashvili moved to foreign policy as he took on the role of Minister of Foreign Affairs, a post he held for just over three months before becoming Prime Minister. As Prime Minister, he pushed for Georgia's integration into Euro-Atlantic structures and aimed to make the country appealing for foreign investors. His government prioritized European integration and worked to build stronger ties with Western institutions.
Kvirikashvili's time as Prime Minister ended on June 13, 2018, when Mamuka Bakhtadze, his former Minister of Finance, took over. The Georgian Parliament approved Bakhtadze with a 99-6 vote on June 20, 2018. Throughout his various ministerial roles, Kvirikashvili focused on sustainable economic development and international cooperation, using his background in medicine and economics to tackle policy challenges from different perspectives.
Before Fame
Growing up in Tbilisi during the Soviet era, Kvirikashvili first studied medicine at Tbilisi State Medical University, as healthcare professions were highly valued in Georgian society. He later developed an interest in economics and policy studies, completing further education at Tbilisi State University and then at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States.
His shift from medicine to economics and international development happened during Georgia's post-independence period. The country was dealing with major economic issues and working to rebuild its institutions. This situation created opportunities for people with various educational backgrounds to help shape policy and economic reform, paving the way for Kvirikashvili's eventual entry into government service.
