Biography
Jüri Ratas was born on July 2, 1978, in Tallinn, Estonia. He went to Tallinn Nõmme Upper Secondary School and then studied at the Tallinn University of Technology and the University of Tartu. Before starting his political career, Ratas was a professional basketball player. He is married to Karin Ratas.
Before Fame
Growing up in Tallinn during the last years of Soviet rule and the early period of Estonian independence, Ratas experienced a country going through major political and economic changes. He spent his early adult years in professional basketball, then moved into public service, starting a political career with the Centre Party that would eventually lead him to the top levels of Estonian government. His education at two of Estonia's leading universities gave him a strong base for his later work in governance and policy.
