Biography

Juan Guillermo Cuadrado Bello was born on May 26, 1988, in Necoclí, a coastal town in Colombia's Antioquia department. He started his professional football journey with Independiente Medellín before moving to Europe in 2009 to join Italian Serie A club Udinese. His early Italian years were tough as he struggled to secure a spot in the first team and was loaned to Lecce for the 2011-12 season. Although Lecce got relegated from Serie A, Cuadrado's strong performances caught the eye of Fiorentina, which signed him and gave him a chance to shine.

Cuadrado's versatility became key throughout his career, as he excelled in several positions on the right side of the field. Whether playing as a right winger, midfielder, or wing-back, he consistently impressed with his speed, direct play, and amazing dribbling skills. His success at Fiorentina led to a big move to Chelsea in February 2015, but his time in the Premier League was short and mostly unsuccessful. Yet, his loan spells at Juventus turned his career around, leading to a permanent transfer in 2017 and making him an important player for one of Italy's top clubs.

While with Juventus, Cuadrado enjoyed much success, winning several Serie A titles, Coppa Italia trophies, and a Supercoppa Italiana. He played a crucial role in helping Juventus dominate Italian football in the late 2010s and early 2020s. After choosing not to renew his contract with Juventus in 2023, he joined Inter Milan on a free transfer, but injuries significantly limited his time on the field during the 2023-24 season. He later signed with Atalanta as a free agent, staying in Serie A where he had achieved the most success.

Internationally, Cuadrado has been a key player for the Colombian national team since his senior debut in 2010. With over 110 caps, he has represented Colombia in numerous big tournaments, including five Copa América editions and two FIFA World Cups. His international highlights include helping Colombia secure third-place finishes at the 2016 and 2021 Copa América tournaments, making him one of Colombia's most experienced and dependable players during a strong era for Colombian football.

Before Fame

Born in the small coastal town of Necoclí in Colombia's Antioquia department, Cuadrado grew up in a place where football was a big part of the local culture. Necoclí, on Colombia's Caribbean coast, was the starting point for the future international star. He began his professional football journey with Independiente Medellín, a well-known club in Medellín, the regional capital.

In the late 2000s, Colombian football started to bounce back from a tough period in the 1990s and early 2000s, when the sport took a back seat to the country's security issues. Young players like Cuadrado began to shine as Colombian football experienced a rebirth. Improved domestic support and more international scouting opened up new chances for talented players to pursue careers in Europe's top leagues.
