Biography

Apollo Milton Obote, born on December 28, 1925, in Uganda, became a major and sometimes controversial political figure in his country's history after it gained independence. He was part of the Lango ethnic group from northern Uganda. Obote attended Busoga College and Makerere University, and also studied at Adams College. Before getting involved in politics, he worked in Kenya as a laborer and clerk. These jobs shaped his nationalist views and exposed him to East African political ideas. After returning to Uganda, he got involved in the push for independence, joining the Uganda National Congress in 1956 and later starting his own party, the Uganda People's Congress, in 1960.

Before Fame

Obote grew up when British colonial rule was strong in East Africa, a time with strict racial hierarchies and limited educational opportunities for Africans. Nationalist sentiments were also starting to grow across the continent. He studied at Makerere University, one of the top institutions in British East Africa, becoming part of a small group of African graduates who would later lead their countries. While working in Kenya, he met Kenyan nationalist figures and got involved in trade union activism, which strengthened his belief in African self-determination and boosted his political ambitions when he returned to Uganda.
