Biography

André Onana, born on April 2, 1996, in the Centre Region of Cameroon, is a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Manchester United and leads the Cameroon national team. His career has taken him to some of Europe's top clubs, making him one of Africa's best goalkeepers. Onana's journey started at Barcelona's youth academy in 2010 when he was 14. After five years there, he moved to Ajax in 2015 and became a key first-team player. He made 214 appearances for Ajax and helped them win three Eredivisie titles. His time in Amsterdam highlighted his shot-stopping and distribution skills, which became hallmarks of his career. In July 2022, Onana joined Inter Milan on a free transfer and had a successful season, winning the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana. His impressive performances helped Inter reach the Champions League final. In 2023, Manchester United signed him for an initial fee of £43.8 million, making him one of their costliest goalkeepers. He is currently on loan to Trabzonspor in the Turkish Süper Lig but is still contracted to Manchester United. Onana began his international career with Cameroon in September 2016, earning over 50 caps. As the national team captain, he has led Cameroon in many international tournaments, including his standout role in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, where he made the Team of the Tournament.

Before Fame

Growing up in Cameroon's Centre Region, Onana honed his football skills in a country known for producing talented goalkeepers for both local and international competitions. His talent was spotted when he was chosen to join Barcelona's famous La Masia academy in 2010, meaning he had to move to Spain at just 14. This was a big step for a young African goalkeeper, as La Masia was known for developing top-tier players in every position. Moving from Cameroon to European football meant he had to get used to new training styles, cultural differences, and tougher competition. During his five years in Barcelona's youth system, Onana sharpened his technical skills and developed the modern goalkeeper abilities that would later shape his professional career, like excellent ball distribution and confidence in playing out from the back.
