Biography
Elvan Abeylegesse, born Hewan Abeye on September 11, 1982, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, became a standout middle and long-distance runner in the 2000s while representing Turkey internationally. Originally from Ethiopia, she later competed as a Turkish citizen, adopting the name Elvan Can before using Abeylegesse. Her career covered multiple distances from 1500 meters to the marathon, including cross country, showing remarkable flexibility in endurance running.
Abeylegesse found her greatest success at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where she won silver medals in both the 5000 meters and 10000 meters for Turkey. Her performances made her one of the top distance runners worldwide, and she set a world record in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:24.68. This achievement was the highlight of her career, and she became one of the fastest women to compete at this distance. She was honored with the Bislett medal in 2004 for her contributions to the sport.
However, the later years of Abeylegesse's career were marred by doping violations that affected her legacy. In August 2015, the Turkish Athletics Federation confirmed she had failed an anti-doping test taken during the 2007 World Championships. Consequently, she lost all results from 2007 to 2009, including two Olympic medals and one World Championship medal, and received a two-year ban from competition.
Despite the controversies at the end of her career, Abeylegesse's impact on distance running during her prime was significant. Her switch from Ethiopian to Turkish representation was part of a larger trend in international athletics. Her achievements showed the worldwide competition in distance running and highlighted both the potential highs in professional athletics and the repercussions of doping violations.
Before Fame
Growing up in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia—a city at a high altitude—Abeylegesse was surrounded by a culture where distance running was important, and the thin air offered natural training perks for endurance athletes. Ethiopia is known for its great talent in middle and long-distance running, with inspiring figures like Abebe Bikila and Haile Gebrselassie encouraging young athletes to hone their skills.
In the early 2000s, many Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes started representing other countries, looking for better training, financial support, and competitive opportunities. This period of increased athlete movement allowed runners like Abeylegesse to pursue international careers under different flags, taking their natural endurance and high-altitude training to global competitions.
