Biography
Jusuf Nurkić, born August 23, 1994, in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a professional basketball center noted as one of Europe's top NBA players. Known as the "Bosnian Beast," Nurkić is 6 feet 11 inches tall and is recognized for his strong post moves, rebounding, and unexpectedly good passing for his position.
Nurkić entered the NBA when the Chicago Bulls picked him 16th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, making him the highest-drafted Bosnian player. He was immediately traded to the Denver Nuggets on draft night, where he spent three seasons developing his skills. In Denver, he improved gradually, although he faced challenges with playing time and consistency.
Nurkić's career took a significant turn in February 2017 when he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers along with a first-round pick in exchange for Mason Plumlee. In Portland, he found his place, becoming a key part of the team's frontcourt with All-Star guard Damian Lillard. He made an impact right away, helping the Trail Blazers reach the playoffs and providing the inside presence the team needed.
Throughout his career, Nurkić has dealt with major injury challenges, including a severe leg injury in March 2019 that kept him out for over a year. Despite these setbacks, he has shown resilience by returning to form and staying effective on the court. He has also played for the Phoenix Suns and Charlotte Hornets before joining the Utah Jazz, showing his ability to adapt to different team systems.
Internationally, Nurkić has been a key player for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national basketball team, playing in various competitions like the FIBA World Cup and European Championship. His success in both the NBA and international play has made him one of the most notable Bosnian athletes, inspiring a new generation of basketball players from the Balkans.
Before Fame
Growing up in Tuzla during Bosnia and Herzegovina's post-war rebuilding, Nurkić found basketball at a young age. He quickly stood out because of his height and natural athleticism. He started his professional career playing for Cedevita Zagreb in Croatia's top league, where he gained valuable experience against experienced European players.
His performances in European basketball drew the attention of NBA scouts, especially due to his mix of size, skill, and basketball smarts, which suited the modern game well. Moving from European basketball to the NBA was a personal achievement and also showed how basketball talent was increasingly being discovered worldwide, as teams looked beyond traditional American college prospects for new stars.
