Biography
Marek Hamšík, born on 27 July 1987 in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, started his professional football career with Slovan Bratislava in 2004, then joined Italian club Brescia later that year. His impressive performance in Italy caught attention, leading to his 2007 transfer to Napoli, a club newly promoted to Serie A. This marked the beginning of one of the standout careers at a single Italian club in modern times.
At Napoli, Hamšík became one of European football's top midfielders, known for his technical skills, vision, and knack for scoring and setting up goals. His mohawk hairstyle was as familiar to Napoli fans as his on-field performances.
In February 2019, Hamšík left Napoli for Chinese club Dalian Professional, ending his long stint in Italy. He later joined Turkish team Trabzonspor in 2021, helping them win the Süper Lig title in his first year and a Turkish Super Cup in his second. He retired from playing in 2023, capping off nearly two decades at the top level of European and international football.
Internationally, Hamšík played for Slovakia from 2007 to 2023, earning 138 senior caps and scoring 26 goals. He captained the team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Slovakia's first qualification, where they reached the round of 16 by beating defending champions Italy. He also led Slovakia to their first UEFA European Championship in 2016, where they again reached the second round, followed by another appearance in 2020. In 2018, he became Slovakia's most capped player and, in 2019, he passed Róbert Vittek as the country's all-time leading scorer. In 2023, he received the Ľudovít Štúr Order, 2nd class, one of Slovakia's top honors.
After retiring as a player, Hamšík moved into coaching, becoming team manager and assistant coach for the Slovakia national team. His new role shows the high regard in which he is held in Slovak football and his desire to help grow the sport in his homeland.
