Biography

Robinah Nabbanja was born on December 17, 1969, in Kakumiro District, Uganda, to John Kayiira, a farmer and tailor, and Nzeremeri Nakato. She studied at Nkooko Model Primary School in Kyankwanzi and continued her education at Uganda Martyrs University, Uganda Management Institute, and the Islamic University in Uganda. Her background in education set the stage for a career in both teaching and government.

Nabbanja entered politics by winning the seat of Member of Parliament for the Kakumiro District Women Representative. She served in the 10th Parliament from 2016 to 2021 and was re-elected for the 11th Parliament from 2021 to 2026. Her legislative work allowed her to advocate for health, women's issues, and her community in western Uganda.

Before becoming Prime Minister, Nabbanja was the State Minister of Health for General Duties from December 14, 2019, to May 3, 2021. In this role, she was active in Uganda's response to public health issues, gaining experience in administration and policy-making.

On June 21, 2021, the Parliament of Uganda confirmed Nabbanja as Prime Minister, making her the first woman to hold this position in the country's history. She replaced Ruhakana Rugunda, who became Envoy for Special Duties in the Office of the President. Her appointment was important both politically and symbolically, marking a significant moment for women in Ugandan and African leadership.

Before Fame

Robinah Nabbanja grew up in Kakumiro District, a mainly rural area in western Uganda. Her father was both a farmer and a tailor, so she came from humble beginnings. She pursued her education at Nkooko Model Primary School in Kyankwanzi and later attended several universities in Uganda, showing her ongoing dedication to learning, which later shaped her career as a teacher.

Her path to political success began with community representation. When Uganda introduced reserved Women Representative seats in Parliament, it opened up opportunities for women from districts across the country to get involved in national politics. Nabbanja took advantage of this by starting her political career in Kakumiro District, where she became recognized locally. She then won a parliamentary seat in 2016, which paved the way for her eventual rise to the position of Prime Minister.
