Biography

Zohran Kwame Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, to Indo-Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani and Indian filmmaker Mira Nair. After living in Cape Town, South Africa, for three years, the family moved to New York City when Zohran was seven. He attended Bronx High School of Science and later got a bachelor's degree in Africana studies from Bowdoin College in 2014. Growing up across three continents with parents involved in academia and film gave him a unique view on race, class, and political economy, which influenced his career.

Before stepping into politics, Mamdani worked as a housing counselor, helping residents deal with New York City's challenging housing system. He also had a career as a rapper, releasing music with social and political messages. These experiences shaped his politics to focus on the real-life situations of working-class New Yorkers. He then got involved in political organizing as a campaign manager for Khader El-Yateem and Ross Barkan, which helped him build the skills and connections for his own political ambitions.

In 2020, Mamdani ran for the New York State Assembly in the 36th district, representing Astoria, Queens, and defeated long-time incumbent Aravella Simotas in the Democratic primary. He was reelected without opposition in both 2022 and 2024, becoming one of the most well-known democratic socialists in New York State government. As an assembly member, he supported tenant protections, affordable transit, and expanded public services, aligning himself with the left side of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America.

In October 2024, Mamdani announced he was running for mayor of New York City. His campaign focused on economic issues, suggesting fare-free city buses, universal child care, city-owned grocery stores, a rent freeze for rent-stabilized units, and a $30 minimum wage by 2030. He also supported LGBTQ rights, public safety changes, and higher taxes on corporations and individuals earning over one million dollars a year. In June 2025, he won the Democratic primary in what many called a surprising upset, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo. He then won the November general election and took office as the 112th mayor of New York City in January 2026, becoming the city's first Asian American mayor and first Muslim mayor.

Mamdani is married to Rama Duwaji. His election marked a change in New York City politics, bringing to Gracie Mansion a leader whose career had moved from housing advocacy and music to holding the highest office in the country's largest city.

Before Fame

Zohran Mamdani's early life involved a lot of movement and a wide exposure to global intellectual culture. Born in Kampala to two well-known figures, he grew up in Uganda, South Africa, and later New York City. He attended the Bronx High School of Science and then studied Africana studies at Bowdoin College in Maine. This background led him to focus on issues like colonialism, racial capitalism, and structural inequality instead of more traditional policy roles.

After graduating in 2014, Mamdani didn't take a usual political route. He worked as a housing counselor in New York City, dealing directly with the challenges faced by low-income tenants, and also pursued a career in music as a rapper. These experiences kept him out of the typical political circles and earned him respect in communities that often distrust career politicians. His move into campaign management for local candidates in Brooklyn and Queens connected his grassroots work to his own political career.
