Biography
Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei, born on September 12, 1996, in Kapchorwa District, Uganda, grew up in a region known for producing top distance runners. Situated near Mount Elgon, Kapchorwa offered a backdrop where running was part of the culture and a way to gain international fame. Cheptegei began competing as a teenager and quickly made a name for himself locally and on the continent before gaining global recognition.
Cheptegei gained international attention with strong performances at the World Cross Country Championships and major road races. He won gold in the 10,000 meters at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, and also took gold in the 5,000 meters at the same event. In 2019, he won the title at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, confirming his dominance in long-distance running on various surfaces and distances.
The year 2020 was pivotal for Cheptegei. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, he set two world records, securing his status in athletics history. On August 14, 2020, he broke the 5,000 meters world record at the Monaco Diamond League, finishing in 12:35.36. On October 7, 2020, he broke the 10,000 meters world record in Valencia, Spain, with a time of 26:11.00. This achievement made him only the tenth man to hold both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters world records simultaneously.
At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, held in 2021, Cheptegei won gold in the 10,000 meters and also earned a silver medal in the 5,000 meters. His success in both events showed his adaptability and consistency at the highest competition levels. He added three World Championship titles in the 10,000 meters during this time, confirming his status as one of the most successful distance runners of his era.
In the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Cheptegei delivered a memorable performance by winning the 10,000 meters gold medal and setting a new Olympic record. This victory cemented his status as a leading figure in global distance running and made him a two-time Olympic champion in the event. In addition to his track successes, Cheptegei also held the world best time over 15 kilometers on the roads, showing a versatility matched by few in the sport's history.
Before Fame
Cheptegei grew up in Kapchorwa District, a hilly part of eastern Uganda that's known for producing top runners. The region is home to the Sebei people, where distance running is a strong tradition, and young athletes often train on rough ground that naturally boosts their aerobic capacity and leg strength for long-distance races. Cheptegei went to school locally and started running competitively in his early teens, helped by local coaches and inspired by earlier Ugandan runners like Stephen Kiprotich.
Early in his career, he took part in junior and under-20 events on the international stage, showing consistent improvement and unusual tactical skill for his age. By his late teens, he was already competing at the senior level and gaining attention from the global athletics community. The guidance from the Uganda Athletics Federation and his experience in international competitions through Diamond League meetings and cross country championships helped him grow from a promising young talent into a world-class competitor.
