Biography
Salvador Cabañas Ortega was born on August 5, 1980, in Asunción, Paraguay. He started his professional football career in Paraguay before becoming one of the standout strikers in South and North American football during the 2000s. Known for his technical skills, powerful shots with both feet, accurate headers, and strong positional play, Cabañas became an all-around forward who could excel in various leagues around the world.
He began his club career with Club 12 de Octubre and Guaraní in Paraguay before going international. He played for Audax Italiano in Chile, where he became one of the top scorers, and then moved to Mexico. There, his career took off, especially at Club América, one of Mexico's top football teams, where he became a reliable and prolific scorer, establishing himself as one of the best strikers in the country. He also played for Chiapas in Mexico before and after his time at América, and later for General Caballero, Tanabi in Brazil, and Independiente F.B.C.
Internationally, Cabañas played for Paraguay from 2004 to 2010, earning 44 caps and scoring 10 goals. He participated in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and the 2007 Copa América. His performances in the Copa Libertadores were outstanding as he was the top scorer in both 2007 and 2008, highlighting his skill in top-level South American club football. In 2007, he was named Paraguayan Footballer of the Year and South American Footballer of the Year, showing his status among the continent's top players at the time.
On January 25, 2010, Cabañas was shot in the head in a nightclub in Mexico City, shocking the football community. He survived, but the injury ended his career as a top-level player. Sixteen months later, he made an emotional return in a tribute match between the Paraguay national team and Club América. This event showed the affection and respect he had earned during his career.
After the tribute match, Cabañas tried to resume competitive football, playing for clubs in Paraguay and Brazil, but he never regained his former prowess. His story remains one of the most dramatic in modern Latin American football, with great achievements overshadowed by a tragic event that cut short a potentially even more successful career.
Before Fame
Salvador Cabañas grew up in Asunción, Paraguay, a country known for its strong football culture but not as much infrastructure as larger South American nations like Brazil and Argentina. During the 1990s, he honed his skills in Paraguayan domestic football, joining Club 12 de Octubre and later Guaraní. These clubs have traditionally been starting points for Paraguayan talent looking for opportunities abroad.
Moving to Chile's Audax Italiano was a turning point for Cabañas, gaining him wider attention. As a successful forward in the Chilean Primera División, Cabañas showed that he could perform well beyond Paraguay's domestic competition. This experience laid the groundwork for his eventual move to Mexico, where he would reach the peak of his career.
