Biography

Aidyn Akanuly Aimbetov was born on July 27, 1972, in Kazakhstan. He is a Kazakh cosmonaut known for being the first to fly as a national of independent Kazakhstan. While Kazakhstan had previously sent Toktar Aubakirov to space in 1991, that was under the Soviet Union, making Aimbetov’s mission particularly important for Kazakhstan as an independent country. He trained at Star City, the Russian space training center near Moscow that has prepared space travelers for many years.

Aimbetov went to the International Space Station in 2015 as part of Expedition 45, a mission that brought pride to Kazakhstan and highlighted the country's role in human spaceflight. He was the third Kazakhstani to travel to space, following Aubakirov and others. On Expedition 45, he worked with crew members from other countries at the ISS, conducting scientific research and maintenance in low Earth orbit.

Throughout his career, Aimbetov has received several honors from the Kazakhstani government, recognizing his space achievements and service. He has been awarded the title of Hero of Kazakhstan, one of the nation’s highest honors, along with the Order of Fatherland. Other recognitions include a medal for 20 years of Kazakhstan's independence, the title of Pilot-Cosmonaut of Kazakhstan, and a medal for impeccable service, showing the high regard in which he is held.

Aimbetov's spaceflight was more than a personal achievement. It also highlighted Kazakhstan's identity as an independent and technologically advanced country involved in international space exploration. The Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, rented by Russia, has been the launch site for crewed missions to the ISS for a long time, linking the country closely to space activities even before sending its own citizens into space. Aimbetov's mission underscored Kazakhstan’s ongoing connection to space exploration.

Before Fame

Aimbetov was born in 1972 in Kazakhstan, back when it was still part of the Soviet Union. During that time, Kazakhstan was already involved in the Soviet space program because it was home to the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Growing up with the influence of Soviet space missions and later experiencing Kazakhstan's independence in 1991 influenced his decision to pursue aerospace and military careers.

He became a cosmonaut after going through military and technical training and was eventually chosen for the Kazakhstani cosmonaut program. He trained at Star City in Russia, where many notable space travelers have prepared for their missions. This rigorous training readied him for his journey to the International Space Station.
