Biography

José Luis Félix Chilavert González was born on July 27, 1965, in Luque, Paraguay, a city with a strong football background located just outside the capital, Asunción. He became known as one of the top goalkeepers of his generation, playing for clubs across Paraguay, Argentina, Spain, France, and Uruguay. His career included stints with Sportivo Luqueño, Guaraní, San Lorenzo de Almagro, Real Zaragoza, Vélez Sarsfield, RC Strasbourg, and Peñarol, among others. Throughout his career, he won 12 club titles and received the IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper award three times, highlighting his status as one of the best goalkeepers of his time.

Chilavert's most successful club years were at Vélez Sarsfield in Argentina, where he won the 1994 Copa Libertadores and the 1994 Intercontinental Cup. A quick and agile goalkeeper, he was known for his leadership and strong personality. What really set him apart was his skill as an outfield player, scoring 67 goals in his career, many from free kicks and penalties. This makes him the second-highest scoring goalkeeper of all time, only behind Brazilian keeper Rogerio Ceni. He is also one of only three goalkeepers in history to score a hat-trick in a competitive match.

For the Paraguay national team, Chilavert earned 74 caps between 1989 and 2003, scoring eight international goals and serving as captain in the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup tournaments. Four of his international goals came during Paraguay's qualification campaign for the 2002 World Cup, playing a key role in getting his country to football’s biggest stage. He also participated in three Copa América tournaments—in 1991, 1993, and 1997—and was named in the 1998 FIFA World Cup Team of the Tournament for his performances in France.

Off the field, Chilavert was known as much for his fiery attitude as for his talent. Nicknamed 'El Buldog,' or 'The Bulldog,' he often wore a cartoon bulldog on his goalkeeper jersey, showing his tenacity and flair for self-expression. One famous incident happened in 1997 when he was sent off after a fight with Colombian striker Faustino Asprilla during a match, capturing the intensity he brought to the game. Despite his controversies, his impact on both the sport and Paraguayan football, in particular, was recognized by peers, coaches, and football administrators throughout his career.

Before Fame

Chilavert grew up in Luque, a Paraguayan city known for its deep football roots and home to one of the country's oldest clubs, Sportivo Luqueño, where he started his professional career. He came of age during a time when South American football was producing many technically skilled players. Paraguay, though often overshadowed by larger neighbors like Argentina and Brazil, had a strong domestic football setup that supported young, talented players.

His early years at Sportivo Luqueño and later Guaraní laid the groundwork for him to catch the attention of bigger Argentine clubs. Moving to Argentina, with its more competitive league and greater international attention, significantly boosted his career. By the time he joined Vélez Sarsfield, he had already honed a mix of goalkeeping skills, physical presence, and set-piece ability that defined his career.
